Located at Janpath, Lal Kothi, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium cricket stadium in Jaipur lies on one corner of the Rambagh Circle. The foundation stone of this stadium was laid during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, who was also famously known as SMS. This is why the stadium is also popularly known as SMS Stadium.
Established in the year 1969, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium is owned by the Rajasthan State Sports Council and is operated by the Rajasthan Cricket Association. This stadium holds a total of 23,185 seats.
The SMS Stadium Jaipur is also the Home ground of Rajasthan Royals India Premier League IPL cricket team from the city of Jaipur. Founded in 2008, the Rajasthan Royals team is owned by Manoj Badale. However, the team has been suspended till the 2017 season.
The Sawai Mansingh Stadium also hosts an Indoor Stadium, which is often addressed as the Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium. It is owned and operated by the Rajasthan State Sports Council and has a capacity of 2,000. It is efficient of hosting any indoor sporting event played at the Olympics and is also used for several non-sporting events as well.
The SMS Stadium is the Home ground of Jaipur Pink Panthers Pro Kabaddi League team. Jaipur Pink Panthers team from the city of Jaipur is owned by actor Abhishek Bachchan. They played their First Match against Bengaluru Bulls on August 20, 2014 at SMS stadium. They also won the inaugural edition of the league in 2014.
The SMS Indoor Stadium is well-equipped with all required amenities such as air-conditioning, players’ changing room and lounge, dope control and medical rooms, media center, state-of-the-art-acoustics, parking facilities and maple wood flooring at playing field.
