Army is said to be the most significant part of a country’s internal system. For India, importance of army is even more vital. There has been continuous demand for improving the facilities of soldiers and providing them more and more modern equipments which can be very helpful for them.
Last year, with an objective of bringing modernization in the defence, central government increased the defence budget up to Rs. 2, 29, 000 crore rupees and it was increased at the rate of 12.5% from preceding security budget. Although this year, quantum of security budget was kept undisclosed but higher increment was already on the cards because of higher security concerns from the neighbouring countries and internal riots and other calamities.
So it clearly demonstrates that government is cautious for the modernization of army and is eager to provide better facilities.
Now one more step has been taken in direction of achieving modernization in army. There have been continuous complaints about the weight of bullet proof jackets of soldiers and how difficult it is for them to wear those jackets and then safeguard the border. So to eradicate this issue, special bullet proof armour panel are getting ready in Jaipur which is helpful both for soldiers and the army vehicles.
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has given the project to MNIT Jaipur and have also funded them to the tune of Rs. 19 lakhs. Currently, Research is going on in Department of Tribology of MNIT for preparing the material that can bear 30 MM bullet. MNIT has to complete the projects up to May 2017.
Both light and heavy material shall be prepared from ceramic and glass fibre rain forced polymer so that it can tolerate the attack of 30 mm bullet.
According to experts, there are silicates in ceramic or marble slurry and if they get mixed into polymer, then its strength can expand. Likewise, Glass fibre is strong while polymer is flexible, if they get mixed; it shall not only be light weight but durable also.
Once the special panel gets ready, it can help the soldiers to get rid of the heavy bullet proof jackets which they are already using. Also the jackets can get fixed into army vehicles.
Indian army should be given more and more facilities and better equipments. Make in India, a dream project of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi should also look on the opportunities of developing better equipments within India instead of getting them imported from outside India. Further other equipments and army vehicles should also be updated according to current technology.
