Saina Nehwal wins Australian Open Badminton Title


Top Indian player Saina Nehwal has won the Women’s’ Singles Title of Australian Open Super Series Badminton Tournament. It is the first title of Saina in this season while second in last 3 years in Australia.

Placed at 8th in the world rankings, Saina defeated Sun Yu Ek of China by 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 in the final match of the tournament to win the title. The total prize money of the tournament was 7.5 lacs dollars.

After losing the first game of the match, Saina made a fabulous comeback against the 12th ranked opponent and won both the next games and thus winning the championship. She has now won 6 matches out of 7 played against Sun Yu. She defeated Sun Yu last year in China Open, Australian Open, Malaysian Open & All England Open. Saina was being defeated only once by Sun Yu in China Open in year 2013.

Flourish of wishes and awards

Badminton Authority of India (BAI) has declared to award Saina 10 lacs rupees and has extended congratulations to her for this terrific win.

Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also extended their congratulations to Saina for winning Australian Open Championship. Besides them, Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Virat Kohli and various other celebrities and sports persons praised Saina.

A good sign for Saina before Rio Olympics

Saina Nehwal has now the increased the hope of millions of Indians who are expecting her to win a medal in the upcoming Rio Olympics. Rio Olympics is going to commence within 7 weeks from now. Saina still needs to work on few areas to give a commendable performance in mega event. Saina has raised her fitness level after continuous efforts in last few months, which she has shown in semi-final and final of Australian Open Tournament.

In the recent January, ankle of Saina was badly injured which kept her away from sports for almost 2 – 2.5 months. But she is back to the same level as she was before her injury.

Her coach and support staff worked really hard to regain her fitness and helped her in her front movement, net movement and stroke picking while moving back. Saina still needs to work on her movements.  But as far as Chinese opponents are concerned, they haven’t thrown any threatening challenge to Saina in the recent tournaments.

Along with Saina, other sportsperson have been doing really well in the on-going tournaments. These are really sign for India just before the commencement of Rio Olympics. Go India Go!
